Collection: 3D Systems Full Color Materials

Bring Your Prototypes to Life with 3D Systems Full Color CJP Materials

3D Systems ColorJet Printing (CJP) technology is the only additive manufacturing process capable of producing models in full CMYK color, enabling unparalleled design communication and visual prototyping. The materials utilized in CJP—specifically the VisiJet PXL powder and its compatible color binders—deliver photo-realistic models with high resolution, making them essential for architecture, consumer product design, medical modeling, and education. By combining a durable core powder with precisely jetted, pigmented binders, CJP allows you to capture texture maps, gradients, and complex color palettes in a single build, bridging the gap between digital design and physical reality.

ColorJet Printing

The unique nature of ColorJet Printing means the "material" is comprised of several interacting components: the core build medium, the color binders, and the essential post-processing infiltrants. This process, utilized by the ProJet x60 series printers, produces high-definition, hard models that are ideal for communicating complex concepts that require visual clarity.

VisiJet PXL / C4 Spectrum Core Powder

The foundation of every ColorJet print is the core build material, which is a fine, white, plaster-based powder that allows for subsequent bonding and coloration.

  • VisiJet PXL (or C4 Spectrum) Core: This material is dispersed across the build platform in fine layers. It acts as the canvas for the colors and provides the bulk structure of the final part. After a print job is complete, the unfused powder is simply vacuumed away, providing excellent geometric freedom without the need for complex support removal.
  • Model Properties: The as-printed parts are slightly fragile and porous, which is by design, as this porosity is necessary to accept the colored binder and the subsequent strengthening infiltrant. These core materials are used to create durable concept models and prototypes that accurately represent the intended product geometry.

CMYK Binders and Color Spectrum

The "Color" in ColorJet Printing comes from the pigmented binders that are selectively jetted onto the white core powder to fuse and color the model simultaneously.

  • CMYK Color Binders: The ProJet printers utilize four primary color binders: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black. These are combined at the voxel level to produce over a million distinct colors. The print heads jet these binders with precision, allowing for the application of complex texture maps, gradients, and even full-color photo-realistic images directly onto the part's surface.
  • Application: These binders are essential for visualizing complex data (e.g., stress analysis, fluid flow), rapid design verification, and creating end-user models where aesthetic representation is the primary function.

Strengthening Infiltrants for CJP Models

Since the core powder is porous, an important final step in the CJP process is infiltration to provide the necessary rigidity and surface durability.

  • Infiltrants: After printing, the model is submerged or coated with an infiltrant (often an epoxy or hardener) which wicks into the porous structure, solidifying the final part. This process significantly increases the strength and durability of the model while enhancing the vibrancy and depth of the printed colors.
  • Types: Standard infiltrants improve general durability, while specialized infiltrants may be used to achieve a glossy finish or increase the part's mechanical resilience for handling and presentation.
