Markforged’s Material Science

The core philosophy behind Markforged’s material science is to move 3D printing beyond mere prototyping and into the realm of real-world functional production. They achieve this by controlling material composition at a microscopic level, resulting in parts with predictable, high-level mechanical properties.

Markforged Composites & Continuous Fiber Materials

Markforged’s composite platform is built around Onyx, a versatile nylon mixed with chopped carbon fiber that forms the strong, durable matrix for all fiber-reinforced parts. The power of CFF technology allows for the embedding of continuous reinforcing fibers into this matrix, yielding composite parts with a strength-to-weight ratio superior to 6061-T6 aluminum.

  • Onyx: The base material, providing high-quality finish, chemical resistance, and stiffness. It is available in specialty variations like Onyx FR (Flame Retardant) and Onyx ESD (Electrostatic Dissipative).
  • Carbon Fiber: Provides the highest strength and stiffness, ideal for load-bearing brackets, fixtures, and jigs.
  • Fiberglass: Offers high strength with better impact resistance and a lower cost than Carbon Fiber.
  • Kevlar: Provides excellent abrasion resistance and exceptional resilience, often used for parts that undergo repeated, high-impact stress.
  • HSHT Fiberglass (High-Strength High-Temperature): Best choice for tooling and parts requiring strength retention in elevated temperatures.

Markforged Metal Materials (ADAM Technology)

The Atomic Diffusion Additive Manufacturing (ADAM) process uses bound metal powder rods to create parts layer-by-layer, which are then washed and sintered into fully dense metal. This process eliminates the safety risks associated with loose powders while maintaining the speed and complexity of 3D printing. The resulting parts achieve properties comparable to those of traditionally manufactured metals.

  • 17-4 PH Stainless Steel: A workhorse metal known for high strength, corrosion resistance, and heat treatability, widely used for tooling andmechanical components.
  • Inconel 625: A high-performance superalloy perfect for applications requiring high-temperature resistance and exceptional corrosion resistance in harsh chemical environments.
  • A2 and D2 Tool Steel: Used for high-wear tooling, stamping, and cutting applications due to their hardness and abrasion resistance.
  • Copper: Highly valued for its excellent thermal and electrical conductivity, ideal for heat sinks, busbars, and welding shanks.

Markforged Engineering Plastics (Onyx and Specialty Thermoplastics)

Beyond the fiber-reinforced materials, Markforged offers robust thermoplastics for basic functional prototyping and design iteration.

  • Nylon White: A pure, un-reinforced nylon suitable for applications that require a durable, resilient plastic that can be dyed or painted.
  • Precise PLA: A cost-effective material used for rapid concept models and visual prototypes where dimensional accuracy and low-cost iteration are the primary concerns.
  • Smooth TPU 95A: A flexible, rubber-like material used to create gaskets, seals, dampeners, and parts requiring high elasticity and tear strength.
