Overview of 3D Printing Materials From Leading Manufacturers

Advantage 3D offers a comprehensive range of materials from three of the most advanced manufacturers in the industry. From high-strength composites and engineering-grade thermoplastics to photopolymer resins, nylon powders, and full-color inkjet materials, these options support a wide variety of applications across design, engineering, manufacturing, dental, medical modeling, and creative production.

Markforged Materials: Continuous Fiber Composites & Metal

Markforged is renowned for materials that deliver parts stronger than aluminum, built on their Continuous Fiber Fabrication (CFF) and Additive Manufacturing (ADAM) technologies. CFF allows for the reinforcement of base materials like Onyx (micro-carbon filled nylon) with continuous strands of Carbon Fiber, Kevlar, or Fiberglass, creating composite parts with exceptional strength-to-weight ratios. The ADAM process uses proprietary metal powders (such as Stainless Steel, Tool Steel, and Inconel) bound in a plastic matrix, enabling the printing of fully dense, high-performance metal parts that are ready for sintering. These materials are the choice for production tooling, jigs, fixtures, and highly stressed functional parts.

3D Systems Materials: Production Resins, Plastics, & Wax

3D Systems offers the industry’s most versatile material portfolio, spanning multiple technologies. For DLP (Figure 4), the resins include high-speed production plastics like PRO-BLK 10 and durable, high-temp materials like HI TEMP 300-AMB. For MJP (MultiJet Printing), materials include durable VisiJet plastics for detailed prototypes and specialized VisiJet M2 ICast wax for clean-burning investment casting patterns. Additionally, 3D Systems provides NextDent biocompatible resins, which are essential for manufacturing medical and dental devices that require stringent regulatory approval.

Mimaki Materials: Full-Color UV-Curable Resins

Mimaki materials are centered around their innovative UV-curable inkjet technology, providing the highest level of visual realism available in 3D printing. Their core materials are durable acrylic photopolymer resins cured instantly by UV light. The primary advantage is the ability to print over 10 million vibrant colors using CMYK plus clear and white inks. This capability allows users to produce parts with variable transparency, photorealistic textures, and fine surface details that are immediately ready for presentation or validation. These materials are essential for high-impact communication models, detailed consumer prototypes, and artistic applications where visual fidelity is paramount.
