On Press Issue: Muddy Halftones
Potential Causes
Excessive ink being added to the plate
Solution: Lower the ink settings or use a stronger ink.
Plate improperly processed
Solution: Recheck exposure using Gray (Stouffer) scale.
Excessive linting
Solution: See Picking/Linting.
Improper form roller settings
Solution: Adjust rollers to the proper specifications.
Improper ink/water balance. Ink may be over-emulsified
Solution: Adjust to proper ink/water balance.
Ink body too soft
Solution: Adjust/reformulate the ink for a tighter body.
Blanket worn out
Solution: Check for a glazed blanket. Replace blanket if necessary.
