On Press Issue: Picking/Linting
Potential Causes
The uncoated stock is too fibrous
Solution: Select a less fibrous stock or seal with a primer or extender.
Coating on the paper/board does not have proper adhesion to the stock
Solution: Check the adhesion of the coating on the stock. Test the strength of the stock.
Too much water reaching the paper
Solution: Reduce water settings.
Ink is too high in tack
Solution: Reduce the tack of the ink using the proper reducer. Increase ink film thickness.
Not enough ink on the rollers
Solution: Reduce the strength of the ink to increase ink film thickness.
Pressure set too high for the ink/substrate combination
Solution: Reduce impression pressure, repack if necessary.
Blanket is too tacky
Solution: Consult blanket manufacturer. Treat blanket or change to a less tacky blanket. Check blanket wash.
Blanket is improperly packed
Solution: Correct packing. Under packing causes piling as well as overpacking.
